Comestar Holstein is a family business established in Victoriaville, in the heart of Quebec. Founded in 1977 by Marc and France, the farm has been developing high Holstein genetics recognized throughout the world for over 45 years. In 1993, Marc and France joined forces with Belgian-born Nicole and Freddy Steen, who came to settle in Quebec. This partnership lasted 15 years, although Freddy and Nicole remained active in the business afterwards. Today, Comestar is still managed by Marc and France and, since 2013, their children Steve, Julie and Julien Turmel, Julie’s husband, have joined the list of partners.
The herd has more than 1100 subjects (500 lactating cows), the base coming from the brood cow Comestar Laurie Sheik TB-88 23*. Several bulls from this large and popular family have been proven such as Leader, Lee, Lheros, Outside, Stormatic, Lauthority and more recently Lemagic, Loyall and Legacy. Comestar is the only herd in the world to have 4 millionaire bulls from the same family.
With over 3,300 embryo transfers under its belt, Comestar has always been on the lookout for advancements in agriculture. Currently, the farm is a satellite station of Boviteq and uses their fertilization program In Vitro for over 15 years.
The year 2020 represents a major turning point for the company with the start of robotic milking. A complex currently having 7 active Delaval V300 robots, but could eventually accommodate an 8thnd, was built not far from the original farm.
Over the years, Comestar's breeding philosophy has never changed, combining production and conformation with the latest bulls.
